Course descrition:
ocean engineering is an
interdisciplinary branch concerned with all aspects of exploration and
exploitation of resouces of the ocean. With approximately 7000 km of coastline
and an Exclusive Economic Zone covering an area more than the land area of the
nation, our dependence on the oceans are bound to increase in the future and
education in the field of Ocean Engineering prepares one to meet the great
challenges waiting in harnessing the ocean resources. The major resources of
the Ocean are biological resources like the marine animals and plants, physical
resources like petroleum and natural gas, minerals, fresh water, sand and
gravel, energy from waves and tides and non extractive resources like
transporation, recreation and waste disposal among others.
Naval Architecture,through an independent
discipline for several decades in our country, the two premier Institutions
offering this course (IIT Kharagpur and IIT Madras) decided to merge it with OE
to make the discipline more comprehensive and wider in scope to include many
more complimentary subjects in the curriculum thus providing an opportunity for
the graduates to be gainfully employed in many industries involved in the
activities related to the oceans.
Like any other Engineering disciplines, apart
from the core courses in Science and Mathematics, the students undergo rigorous
courses in fluid and solid mechanics, wave hydrodynamics, analysis and design
of offshore structures, foundation and coastal engineering. A few of the other
specialised courses in the curriculum are, design, construction and maintenance
of ships and other surface and submerged vessels, CAD-CAM, computational
methods in fluid dynamics, port and harbour engineering and coastal zone
management. In addition the curriculum gives a lot of emphasis in imparting
excellent experimental skills. The compulsory industrial internship in
Shipyards and allied offshore industries provides unique exposure to students
to industrial practices.
Being an interdisciplinary area, the UG
students of Ocean Engineering have ample opportunity to pursue higher studies
in India and abroad in any one of the specialised areas covered in the
curriculum. Those looking for a career in Academic and R & D, degrees up to
doctoral levels are very much within the reach
Job opportunities:
A wide variety of job
opportunities are available to the graduates in companies specialising in
design, construction and installation of offshore structures, ship building and
repair, coastal and port engineering, classification societies, statutory
bodies, design and construction wing of the Indian Navy, companies specialising
in seismic and hydrographical surveying and drilling, defence laboratories,
coast guards, port trusts etc. many graduates also find employment in allied
engineering professions, management and information technology. Being a
multidisciplinary branch, graduates of Ocean Engineering can set high goals for
professional growth and literarily sky is the liimit!
